Flashing Red Light Above Temperature Gauge

Title says it all really, can any one clue me into what it means ?

This is a backup to the temp gauge. If it starts flashing, you are seriously overheating and should switch off the engine.

 

But it does flash briefly when you start as a self check (ie bulb is still working)
